Known for her rich tone and emotive performances, Kate Bishop, mezzo-soprano, has become increasingly recognized for the brilliance of her instrument. Bishop grew up in Denton, Texas around the lively musical scene of the city, and lived with a musical family. Her mother, an amateur soprano, and her father, a pianist, raised Bishop and her three siblings to love music. She grew up singing in choirs, both at her church and school. She excelled in her choir classes, participating in state choirs multiple years, and taking upon leadership positions. Bishop was very involved in music organizations from the beginning, and made her musical success her priority. She realized her passion for singing after taking private voice lessons in high school.
Bishop enrolled for college at Baylor University, where she earned her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and History minor. Bishop joined Baylor Opera Theater in 2018, and sang the roles of Famigliari I and Amori in the 2019 production of L’incoronazione di Poppea. During her last year of undergraduate study, she performed the role of Madame Kirsten for Baylor Opera Theatre’s production of Captain Lovelock. Bishop has performed multiple opera scenes, including her role as Hansel in scenes from Hansel and Gretel, Mercédès in scenes from Carmen, Old Lady in scenes from Candide, and Third Lady in scenes from Die Zauberflöte. While at Baylor, she sang in both the Baylor A Cappella Choir and Baylor Chamber Singers.
After earning her Bachelor of Music from Baylor University in 2021, Bishop since returned to her Alma Mater and earned her Master of Music in Vocal Performance. Bishop has performed a variety of opera roles, including Baba (The Medium) at the Queens Summer Vocal Institute, Madame de Lebion (Pompadour Porcelain) with Landlocked Opera, Fricka (Das Rheingold) with LAH-SOW, Prince Charmant (Cendrillon) with the Utah Vocal Arts Academy, Hansel (Hansel and Gretel) with Opera Pannonica in Croatia and both Turnspit and 3rd Woodsprite (Rusalka) with LAH-SOW in Philadelphia, PA. She has also performed as Quiltlover in Michael Ching's R.S.B.E. with the Taos Opera Institute in 2021. Bishop has also performed with Music On Site, Inc. as La Sorella Infermiera (Suor Angelica) as well as Lady Angela (Patience) and Luisa Fernanda (Luisa Fernanda) with Baylor Opera Theatre.
As a stage director, Bishop has worked with a number of companies in both primary stage directing and assistant directing. Most recently, Bishop served as Co-Stage Director of Landlocked Opera's world premiere of Pompadour Porcelain by Felix Jarrar, as well as Assistant Director for LAH-SOW's production of Das Rheingold in July 2024 and as Stage Director of Amahl and the Night Visitors in December 2023 with Music On Site, Inc.. She has also directed scenes programs, including "Opera Goes to the Movies!" at the Utah Vocal Arts Academy in 2023. In Maine, Bishop served as Assistant Director for Quisisana's two opera productions of The Magic Flute and La Traviata in the summer of 2023. Additionally, Bishop has served as Stage Director for Music On Site, Inc.’s 2022 Opera Scenes Showcase and as Assistant Director for their 2021 production of Amahl and the Night Visitors. Also offstage, Bishop has served as Stage Manager for the University of North Texas’ Opera Theatre’s 2021 production of The Bartered Bride, and Assistant Director of Baylor Opera Theatre’s productions of A Hand of Bridge and the 2021 Spring Opera Scenes.
