Kate Bishop is an American mezzo-soprano and Stage Director committed to the art of storytelling through music and opera.
Known for her rich tone and emotive performances, Kate Bishop, American mezzo-soprano, is increasingly recognized for the brilliance of her instrument. Bishop grew up in Denton, Texas around the lively musical scene of the city, and lived with a musical family. Her mother, an amateur soprano, and her father, a pianist, raised Bishop and her three siblings to love music. She grew up singing in choirs, both at her church and school. She excelled in her choir classes, participating in state choirs multiple years, and taking upon leadership positions. Bishop was very involved in music organizations from the beginning, and made her musical success her priority. She realized her passion for singing after taking private voice lessons in high school.
Bishop enrolled for college at Baylor University, where she earned her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and History minor. Bishop joined Baylor Opera Theater in 2018, and sang the roles of Famigliari I and Amori in the 2019 production of L’incoronazione di Poppea. During her last year of undergraduate study, she performed the role of Madame Kirsten for Baylor Opera Theatre’s production of Captain Lovelock. Bishop has performed multiple opera scenes, including her role as Hansel in scenes from Hansel and Gretel, Mercédès in scenes from Carmen, Old Lady in scenes from Candide, and Third Lady in scenes from Die Zauberflöte. While at Baylor, she sang in both the Baylor A Cappella Choir and Baylor Chamber Singers. She also participated in the NATS Student Auditions, in which she was a semi-finalist three times, and third runner up in 2018.
After earning her Bachelor of Music from Baylor University in 2021, Bishop has since returned to her Alma Mater to earn her Master of Music in Vocal Performance. Bishop has performed a variety of opera roles, including Hansel (Hansel and Gretel) with Opera Pannonica in Croatia and both Turnspit and 3rd Woodsprite (Rusalka) with LAH-SOW in Philadelphia, PA. She has also performed as Quiltlover in Michael Ching's R.S.B.E. with the Taos Opera Institute in 2021. Bishop has since performed with Music On Site, Inc. as La Sorella Infermiera (Suor Angelica) and has continued to perform with Baylor Opera Theatre. Additionally, Bishop has served as Stage Director for Music On Site, Inc.’s 2022 Opera Scenes Showcase as well as Assistant Director for their 2021 production of Amahl and the Night Visitors. Also offstage, Bishop has served as Stage Manager for the University of North Texas’ Opera Theatre’s 2021 production of The Bartered Bride, and Assistant Director of Baylor Opera Theatre’s productions of A Hand of Bridge and the 2021 Spring Opera Scenes. Bishop is currently studying with Dr. Mark Diamond, and she’s looking forward to performing the role of Lady Angela in Patience this fall, and Le Prince Charmant (Cendrillon) with the Utah Vocal Arts Academy this coming summer.
